Key Notes

  • Structured frameworks for discovering the next research idea. This skill provides ten complementary ideation lenses that help researchers move from vague curiosity to concrete, defensible research proposals.
  • Starting a new research direction and need structured exploration.
  • Feeling stuck on a current project and want fresh angles.
  • Evaluating whether a half-formed idea has real potential.
  • Preparing for a brainstorming session with collaborators.

Excerpt From SKILL.md

1. Problem-First vs. Solution-First Thinking

Research ideas originate from two distinct modes. Problem-First starts with a concrete failure or unmet need. Solution-First starts with a new tool or technique seeking application.

2. The Abstraction Ladder

Move UP (generalize), DOWN (instantiate), or SIDEWAYS (analogize) to reveal ideas invisible at your current abstraction level.

3. Tension and Contradiction Hunting

Breakthroughs often come from resolving tensions between widely accepted but conflicting goals—Performance vs. Efficiency, Privacy vs. Utility, Safety vs. Capability.

Use cases

  • When generating novel research directions from a broad topic.
  • When evaluating and filtering multiple candidate research ideas.
  • When refining an initial idea into a structured, actionable research plan.

Not for

  • Do not rely on this catalog entry alone for installation or maintenance details.
